PRIORITY SYSTEM FOR DATA DISC CHANNELS

There are more users during the day than there are
available data disc channels and IIIs, and this situation
will probably not improve much until some time in 1977.
Therefore, it has become necessary to
institute a priority system. Eventually this system will be
administered by computer, but now it must be manual.

The priorities will be allocated according to project
and reservation.

Category 1 - Research and associated work funded by ARPA
and carried out by people paid under the ARPA contract. This has
highest priority, because almost all the equipment was furnished
by ARPA.

Category 2 - Research and associated work funded by other
contracts and grants that contribute to the support of the
Lab and its computing facilities.

Category 3 - Other Stanford use.

	Category 4 - Guests.

Support work for useful languages, hardware, and utility
programs will be assigned priority on an ad hoc basis.

It is believed that Categories 1 and 2 can be fully supported,
and so far it has been possible to accomodate all users at night.

Here is a first cut at a plan.

Reservations will be taken on a first-come-first served
basis withing a category, but the lowest priority user can be
most recent reservation can be bumped by a user of higher category.
